What is Ambien?
A drug used to treat insomnia (inability to sleep) and anxiety. It works quickly (usually within 15 minutes) and has a short half-life (2-3 hours) but will last longer in patients with hepatic failure.
DIRECTIONS:
Tablet - Comes as tablet to take by mouth. Do not split, chew or crush them. The tablets should be swallowed whole and taken with a full glass of water.
You will probably become very sleepy soon after you take ambien and will remain sleepy for some time after you take the medication. Plan to go to bed right after you take ambien and to stay in bed for 7-8 hours. If you get up too soon after taking ambien, you may experience memory problems.
Ambien can be habit-forming. Do not take a larger dose, take it more often, or take it for a longer time than prescribed by your doctor.
STORAGE:
- Keep it in its tightly closed container.
- Keep it out of reach of children.
- Store the capsules and tablets at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom).
- Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.
WARNING:
Before taking Ambien, Advice your Doctor and Pharmacist if you have these following
- If allergic to Ambien or any other medications
- If you are taking prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products.
- If you drink or have ever drunk large amounts of alcohol, use or have ever used street drugs or have overused prescription medications.
- If you have or have ever had depression, sleep apnea (condition in which the patient briefly stops breathing many times during the night), other breathing problems or liver or kidney disease.
- What herbal products you are taking or plan to take, especially St. John's wort.
- If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.
- If you become pregnant while taking ambien, call your doctor. Do not breastfeed while you are taking ambien.
- If you are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking ambien.
- Do not drink alcohol during your treatment with ambien. Alchohol can make the side effects of ambien worse.
- You should know that your mental health may change in unexpected ways while you are taking this medication.
